Sapta Chakra Viveka (3. Maṇipūra Chakra)

Sapta Chakra Viveka (3. Maṇipūra Chakra)

3. Maṇipūra Chakra (मणिपूर चक्र)

Sanskrit Śloka

नाभौ स्थितं महाचक्रं दशारं मणिपूरकम् ।
रकारबीजसंयुक्तं वह्नितत्त्वप्रकाशकम् ॥

Meaning: The Maṇipūra Chakra, radiant with ten petals, shines at the navel, illumined by the fire element and the bīja RAM.

Maṇipūra, the “city of jewels,” is the radiant center of power, will, and transformation. Situated at the navel region, it is the seat of agni—the inner fire that digests food, impressions, and experiences. This chakra governs self-discipline, confidence, and the capacity to act decisively in accordance with dharma.

The element here is Agni (fire), symbolizing illumination, purification, and strength. The bīja mantra RAM ignites inner clarity and dispels inertia. When Maṇipūra is balanced, the individual possesses courage without arrogance and authority without domination.

In Vedic symbolism, this chakra resonates with the solar principle, often linked to Lord Sūrya. Just as the sun sustains life, Maṇipūra sustains purposeful action. A purified Maṇipūra empowers one to perform one’s duties (svadharma) with enthusiasm and detachment.

Imbalance leads either to weakness and indecision or to excessive control, anger, and egoism. Such distortions arise when the fire of discernment is clouded by desire or fear. Through yogic discipline, this fire is refined into the light of wisdom.

Practices such as Agni-sāra, controlled fasting, selfless service, and recitation of solar mantras strengthen Maṇipūra. This chakra teaches mastery over the self, reminding the seeker that true power lies in self-governance.
