In the sacred traditions of Sanātana Dharma, knowing one’s Gotra helps connect a seeker to their ancestral Ṛishi and lineage. If your Gotra is unknown, you may first consult your family elders, kula-purohit (family priest), or ancestral records, as this wisdom is often preserved through generations. If such details are unavailable, there is no cause for worry — many Vedic rituals allow you to perform sankalpa using your name, birth star (Nakshatra), Rashi and lineage as remembered, or simply state "Shiv Gotra" or "Vishnu Gotra".

In most sacred temples, even if the devotee is unable to be physically present, the Archana is duly performed by the learned Archaka on their behalf. During the sankalpa, the priest reverently chants the devotee’s name, Gotra, and Nakṣatra, invoking divine blessings in their absence.
